[revealing cleavage] and [leg warmers and thick socks]
I dislike anything that reveals cleavage because it has proven itself to attract all the wrong attention from the wrong type of people. The more exposed we are, the more we invite judgment and often not the kind we hope for. I prefer to cover up my body these days, finding peace in modesty and strength in self-respect. Personally, I love the art of fashion; the way we can creatively express ourselves and show love to our bodies by how we “paint” ourselves. I’ve gone from not wearing socks for years to now wearing more than one pair every day. It’s an interesting shift, one that feels right for me at this point in my life.
The Bible has specific instructions on how men and women should dress to avoid trouble. Yes, you heard me right: our clothing matters, not just for protection from the elements but also in how we present ourselves. In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, it says:
“I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”
This verse encourages modesty and a focus on inner beauty, rather than external appearance.
The way we dress can reveal a lot; both to ourselves and to others. Our choices reflect how we feel about our worth and how we want to be perceived. In Proverbs 31:25, it says:
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
This Bible verse reminds us that our clothing can symbolize more than just style. It can express the dignity, strength and confidence that come from knowing who we are in Christ.
When I choose to wear oversized jackets, shirts that don’t reveal cleavage, or thick socks and leg warmers, it’s not just about warmth or comfort. We aren’t meant to obsess about what we wear each day, but there’s nothing wrong with finding modesty in self-expression and creativity. In these ways, I find joy in how I present myself. I’m still working on it though and I believe I still have a ways to go in my journey in modest fashion.
I believe God has created us to enjoy in His designs for our lives, and that includes how we dress. Modesty doesn’t mean we have to abandon creativity, but it does invite us to dress in a way that values our worth, protect ourselves as well as reflect who we are in Him.
What kind of clothing do you like to wear?
