...writing and singing.
They both bring me an immense amount of joy and go hand in hand within my everyday life. I really enjoy music: playing, singing, listening to it. Music actually inspires ideas when I’m writing. I’ve written entire scenes to a tune I’ve grown fond of. I’ve even come up with the idea for my book Novena because of the song Mars, by Gustav Holst.
Singing is such an outlet for me. So is playing my clarinet on a sunny weekend day. I find myself singing often–every day; anytime and anywhere. I sing in my home, my shower, running errands outdoors. I just find it to be a healing mechanism. I have no idea if my voice is any good, but I really don’t care. I imagine myself singing to God a lot of the time. And I know, no matter what anyone else thinks, He loves my songs. I suppose that’s why I like it so much. I’ve been singing to Him since before I can remember; and I always will.
“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.” -Psalm 96:1-2
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly…Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” -Colossians 3:16
Writing creates a similar healing effect. It allows me to have a little control over elements of my life; even if it’s in a simple way like exploring my imagination. My attention deficit allows me to brainstorm endless ideas, so I put them on paper and share them with others.
“My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.” -Psalm 45:1
I used to mentally escape to the world I’m building. During some of my most trying moments of the past 7 years, I’ve gotten lost into the lives of my characters and what they were facing. Sometimes I would even project my own circumstances and feelings onto them, using them as a mirror to reflect my own inner self.
My main character definitely behaves and thinks like me, despite being a male. But, as I’ve already mentioned, the experience has been very therapeutic for me. It was a distraction for a lot of pain I’d experienced. It was something I could have that no one could take away from me; it wouldn’t disappear. In a previous post, I wrote about how writing allowed me to have a different perspective of life itself, as well as people…and God (how He sees us in this story called life).
I suppose I don’t have much else to say about it. Yeah, I could go on in detail about my novel or the songs I write, but it wouldn’t make much sense to do so unless you actually knew me. So, if I ever get around to completing this saga (trilogy), I’ll go ahead a publish it so that you can choose to enjoy it too.
Writing and music.
These are the things I enjoy most for myself while in the world–aside from lavishing in the presence of my Elohim. I believe He gave me these things to find comfort in life. I don’t care about material things much. It gets old and worn fast.
But the song in my heart, my core beliefs, my soul…I get to keep them, and they last forever. These are some of the treasures that I store in heaven; precious things that no one can ever take away from me, because it is within me and only I can produce it.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)
“19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” -Matthew 6:19-21
“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” -John 16:22
