...[Nothing]...[God commands us not to mark your body].
That’s right—nothing. Because I believe God commands us not to mark our bodies. I haven’t even pierced my ears—and I never will.
It’s funny how prompts like these remind me that things like tattoos and piercings have become so normalized in today’s culture. When I was around six or seven, I remember wanting to get my ears pierced. One day, my dad said he’d take me. He was ready to walk me right into Arbor Drugs (before it turned into a CVS!) to get it done. But at the very last second, I chickened out. I was terrified of the needle going through my skin.
Years later, while living in Los Angeles, I briefly entertained the idea of getting a tattoo—angel wings on my back. But once again, the thought of enduring the pain stopped me. Looking back, I’m so glad I never went through with it. I would have regretted it. Now, I see it for what it was—a fleeting idea that didn’t align with the person I am today or the values I hold.
“Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.” —Leviticus 19:28
These days, I try to live as naturally as I can. I don’t wear fake hair or nails. I try to eat clean and wholesome food. I just want to be me—the way God made me. I want to be loved and known for who I am in my most natural form, not for how well I can conform to trends.
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” —Psalm 139:14
I don’t look down on anyone who chooses otherwise, but for me, the decision to forgo tattoos, piercings, and artificial enhancements is about alignment—with my faith, my values, and my understanding of God’s design.
And yes—let’s not forget—I have a serious needle phobia. 😅 So this choice is also a mercy to myself!
In the end, I feel confident in my decision. It’s not about judgment—it’s about obedience, and embracing the beauty of being exactly who God created me to be.
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.” —1 Corinthians 6:19
