...sushi.

I love sushi! It’s my favorite kind of meal. It’s fresh and clean and made of natural, unprocessed foods. I’m a big fan of real food and don’t really partake of food that comes in boxes or cans or bags. Your body isn’t meant to process it. A lot of it isn’t even truly edible—just chemicals your body struggles to break down or put to use for energy.

But, I’ll admit this much—ultra-processed foods taste great! Still, not eating so much of that stuff anymore has changed my palate. I find it overwhelming now. Whether it’s too sweet, too buttery, or too rich, it’s usually just too much for me nowadays.

My usual diet consists of raw (sometimes cooked) fruits and vegetables. I really enjoy goat’s cheese right now—though only a specific kind. I also enjoy certain kinds of fish from time to time. But my daily intake is very straightforward and simple. I make a lot of my meals at home and rarely eat out except on special occasions. Most food is processed, and my body doesn’t recognize much of it anymore. I feel good about eating real food, and I never think about calories or fat. I know that what I’m eating will nourish my body.

But whatever I’m eating—whether it is processed or not—I am grateful to God for it.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…” -James 1:17

He is the reason I even have food on the table. He provides the nourishment I need to sustain my body and spirit throughout the day.

Fasting has taught me that too. Going without food—even for a short while—has helped me understand how easily we take meals for granted. Fasting centers my heart and brings my focus back to the Giver, not just the gift. It reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 4:4:

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

It humbles me and opens me up to hear what He’s trying to bring to my attention. Whether it’s a sushi roll or a single fig, I want my relationship with food to reflect the gratitude I have for the One who provides it. As 1 Corinthians 10:31 says:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

So yes, sushi might be my go-to meal if I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life, but more than that—I want my daily spiritual diet to be rooted in God’s Word, full of thanksgiving, and mindful of the One who fills me, body and soul.
