…my Golden Bar.
What is my Gold Bar? It’s my standards in life; the standards I hold myself to and expect from others as well. I no longer tolerate the things I used to for most of my life. I don’t hold on to people who show me hate. I dust off my sandals and move forward, just as Jesus advised:
“And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.” -Matthew 10:14
Having a Gold Bar–high standards–helps me avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble and problems in life. When you set clear boundaries and expectations, you protect yourself from negativity and emotional turmoil. I’ve learned that by keeping my Gold Bar in place, I can navigate life with more peace, purpose, and clarity. It acts as a shield against the things and people that can pull me down or cause distractions.
Most of the attributes within my Gold Bar come directly from the Word of God, even before I realized they were from there. It felt as though they were already implanted in my heart long before I discovered them in Scripture. The Bible simply confirmed that these standards are the right ones to live by.
As it says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
These standards are not just personal preferences; they are God’s expectations for how we should live and conduct ourselves.
I want to also mention that I don’t expect others, nor myself, to be perfect, never allowed to make mistakes. We will always fall short, and that’s why Jesus came down here, lived the perfect life, and died for us. He came to fulfill the law, not abolish it. He said it best in John 6:38:
“For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”
Jesus knew we couldn’t live up to the law on our own, so He stepped in to fulfill it on our behalf.
As He says in Matthew 5:17:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
This means we still need to strive to live by these standards–the Gold Bar–even though we cannot fully achieve them. The key is to try our best, and that effort is what truly matters in God’s eyes.
What’s important is the effort we put into living well, treating others right, and continually seeking to improve. In 1 Peter 4:8:
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
Our hearts and our efforts, motivated by love, are what make a difference. And in doing so, we avoid the pitfalls that come from neglecting God’s Word or settling for lesser standards.
In the end, the Gold Bar is about having a higher standard for your life and living intentionally according to what God has outlined. It’s a compass that guides you through challenges and keeps you aligned with truth. It can help you avoid unnecessary heartache, poor decisions, and relationships that bring you harm. It provides clarity and protection–shielding you from things that would otherwise drag you down or lead you astray.
