...Nothing.
I don’t really get mad, per se. I’m more often saddened or disappointed than angry at anything or anyone. I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m exhausted with emotions that drain me. If it isn’t joy or contentment, then it’s a waste of time for me. I’m trying to live the rest of my life in peace, and anything that threatens that peace is out the door.
Whenever I feel negative emotions creeping in, I turn to the Word of God.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” -Isaiah 26:3
I read Scripture or quote a verse to remind myself of God’s truth, which never returns void. If someone does something that challenges my value and worth, I remember what God has said about me:
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” -Psalm 139:14
If someone shows me hate or stirs up strife, I forgive and move on. I remember that Jesus Himself said,
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” –Matthew 5:44
If something doesn’t go my way, I trust that God’s plans are greater than mine.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11
I believe in challenging negativity. Every day, I remind myself that I have had enough of dwelling in dark places. Change starts from within, and when your heart is filled with peace, it shines into every area of your life.
So, what makes me mad? Nothing, really. I’ve distanced myself from people and situations that provoke unnecessary turmoil. I choose my actions and my company wisely. But when I am forced to deal with difficult people or circumstances beyond my control, I make the best of it and ask myself: What would Jesus do?
Yes, Jesus felt anger—righteous anger. But me? I don’t even hold that. I’m just too tired of all that. I’d rather let it go, say a heartfelt prayer, and move forward. These days, my only desire is for true Shalom—a deep, unshakable peace.
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” -1 Peter 5:7
I just give it to God.
But what about you? How do you handle negative emotions?
I pray that you, too, will allow God to help you handle it in a way that promotes spiritual maturity and growth.
