...“Monument” by Sarah Kroger.
Simply put, I love this song because it reminds me of what Jesus did for me. He died so that I could have the chance to be with Him for eternity.
For a long time—especially when I was a child—I didn’t fully understand how Jesus dying on a cross (a tree) meant redemption for me. How could that one moment in time reconcile me to God? But as I started reading the Bible for myself, it began to make sense. I realized that He took the punishment I deserved—the punishment I earned through my own selfish, worldly, sinful choices.
It was as if He jumped in front of a bullet meant for me.
Sin always comes at a price. And Jesus paid that price with His life.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” — 1 Peter 2:24
He didn’t deserve what happened to Him. But He loved us so much that He gave His own life. God gave His Son—not out of obligation, but out of love—to give us a way out. A way back. A way home.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
Hell wasn’t even created for us, and yet we were heading there by default. Jesus made a way out.
I’ll never fully understand why He loves us that much. The Bible compares His love to that of a parent for their child—but I don’t have children of my own yet. I wish I did. And if God wills it, I hope one day to have that perspective—to feel that depth of love and understand His heart more clearly.
Still, I know this much: I am precious to Him. I really matter. Even when the world tries to convince me otherwise, God—the Creator of the universe—says that not only do I deserve to exist, but I was worth dying for.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” — Isaiah 49:15
So… this song reminds me of all that. It reminds me that even though I don’t understand everything about God or how deeply He loves us, I know I am special in the eyes of my Creator—my King. And that’s enough to get me through this life… and into the eternity He paid the price for me to have.
“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
